Hans Wegner 1914 — 2007

"What I love about Hans Wegner's furniture is very much to do with the way he works, his method and his integrity. He's obviously completely rooted in the materials and processes that he uses. He's a trained craftsperson, so he designs the furniture, but his studio is also part workshop as well.

"He designs in conjunction with technicians and other craftspeople, so if something can't be done or is difficult, then he works out a way that it can be done. He doesn't just expect other people to be able to solve his problems.

"And the way he uses wood is quite beautiful. As well as his attitude towards it as a natural material, the things he builds have certain qualities that make them last longer.

"That ties in with the idea that I have about leaving a small footprint on the planet while we're here. You make things that are worthwhile and ecologically rooted, responsible without being worthy, and still produce quality items.

— furniture maker David Gates

Hans J Wegner trained as a cabinet-maker before attending the Copenhagen School of Arts and Crafts, where he later lectured from 1946 to 1953. From 1938 to 1942, he worked as a furniture designer in Arne Jacobsen and Erik Moller´s architectural practice. In 1943, he set up his own office in Gentofte and collaborated with Borge Mogensen in the design of an apartment shown at the 1946 Cabinetmakers´ Exhibition in Copenhagen. Throughout his long career, he has designed furniture extensively for Johannes Hansen and Fritz Hansen. The Royal Society of Arts, London made him an Honorary Royal Designers for Industry in 1959.
